On behalf of our 100,000 members worldwide, In Defense of Animals (IDA) requests an investigation into the brutal beating of a sheep by a soldier with a metal baseball bat. This November 2011 incident was caught on video in Afghanistan and has circulated around the Internet tarnishing the reputation of the U.S. Defense Department. The video shows a child looking on and several other soldiers laughing and supporting the beating. It took 12 blows with the sheep convulsing and several attempts at escape before the helpless animal finally died. IDA demands an investigation be conducted into this incident and appropriate prosecutorial action taken for all those involved.

Animal cruelty is punishable by military law under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for “public animals” like bomb-sniffing dogs and military horses. The Commission on Military Justice in 2009 recommended that criminal charges be brought against military personnel who abuse non-public animals like dogs, cats, and farm animals, but it is unclear if the military has heeded the recommendations of the Commission.

This is not the first instance of animal cruelty perpetrated by U.S. soldiers caught on video. Marine David Motari was filmed throwing a puppy over a cliff in Iraq in a 2008 video. This violent and senseless act eventually led to his discharge from military duty.

There is ample scientific documentation showing that people who abuse animals are also a danger to other people. Violent acts towards animals are often precursors to acts of human violence, including domestic violence, sexual violence, and murder. Prosecuting animal mistreatment carried out by military personnel is an important step towards preventing and reducing the risk of violent incidents to other soldiers and civilians as well as their spouses, children, friends and neighbors.

A defense of the video alluded that this killing was carried out to celebrate the Muslim holy festival of Eid where goats are often ritually slaughtered. However, Halal guidelines strictly call for humane slaughter of animals to cause minimal stress. It is prohibited to cause suffering to an animal and is recommended to slaughter an animal with a single kill stroke to the neck. This was obviously a slow, frightening, and painful death for this sheep and not in line with Muslim Halal guidelines.

In Defense of Animals requests a full investigation into this incident and for the perpetrators to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Thank you.

In Defense of Animals is an international animal protection organization located in San Rafael, Calif. dedicated to protecting animals' rights, welfare, and habitat through education, outreach, and our hands-on rescue facilities in Mumbai, India, Cameroon, Africa, and rural Mississippi. _________________________________________________________________________________

I watched the video which I had reservations about. Seeing what this soldier did to this sheep was nauseating. I realize we need to stand up for our troops in war but this man (men) needs to be punished for such a horrific crime. His actions show that he has no regard for the value of an animal’s life.

This person is a sick pathetic excuse for a human being and a disgrace to the country. I have no use for animal abusers and I really do hope and pray this idiot never makes it back home. I wish him and anyone involved the worst.

This is dispicable!!! It is SHAMEFUL that men in the USA MILITARY would do the types of things the ‘enemy’ would do without thinking twice about it. And then ‘film it’ much less. Is this some type of ‘learning’ video they want to show. GET IT TOGETHER FELLAS!!! Makes me wonder who the ‘good guys’ are.

  • Anonymous wrote on 26 January, 2012, 19:40

If this act goes unpunished, that would be an atrocity. A person who can do that to an animal has no regard for life in general. They could be capable of doing violent acts against human beings as well, if not made to suffer the consequences now.

  • carol sedlak wrote on 26 January, 2012, 19:44

This is dispicable!!!! AND – what is so ‘funny’ about beating an animal to death or throwing a puppy over a cliff????? AND what was the purpose of ‘filming’ it all… it some sort of ‘learning’ video for everyone???? SHAME ON YOU…….makes me wonder who the ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’ really are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is truly a sad comment on the military and a savage reflection of some of the men who join it. I can not think of something more dishonorable then harming a defenseless animal for no reason. Add to that this attack was viewed as fun/entertainment. I deeply hope that all involved are brought to severe and quick punishment and the military makes a point to clearly stand against such actions. The fact that we as a tax paying citizens actually are forced to pay this man’s salary while he goes against every humane principle is just unacceptable.

  • Rosie Fuchs wrote on 26 January, 2012, 19:46

I have not seen the video.  But anyone who beats a helpless animal to death is a killer and he deserves to
be beaten to death with that same bat.  He is a monster and needs to be punished with the death penality
And for those who were laughing you are just as guilty as he is.

  • Alli Blank wrote on 26 January, 2012, 19:53

  • Angie W wrote on 26 January, 2012, 19:54

I agree with Rosie F. I think they ought to take a bat and beat the snot out of the soldier that beat the sheep to death, and also beat the soldiers that watched him do it. Bunch of jerks.

I hope that our military will hold this “man” accountable to the fullest extent. Maybe some one should let our president see this video and get his opinion on the matter……

I despise these kind of people, is that what they learn in the Army? What will become of a criminal like that once he retunrs to his home country, will he kill animals and people ?
This case should be investigated thoroughly and the people who were involved in this cruelty should all be punished severely with many years of imprisonment and monetary fines.
Shame on these American persons, shame and shame again.

  • Ruth Abbott wrote on 26 January, 2012, 23:40

And they should be very severe punishments! It’s disgusting and disturbing!

There is no excuse for this. The army needs to aggressively prosecute these psychopaths then get them out of the military. No one who is capable of doing this to an innocent animal should be allowed to carry a gun…ever.

  • sw wrote on 27 January, 2012, 7:47

This person should be discharged from the U.S. military. This type of behavior should not be tolerated by the military. These men are representing our country. What a sick and disturbed individual – I don’t care what he has witnessed (killing, etc.) and there is absolutely no excuse for doing what he did (and in front of a child). I say prosecute him to the fullest extent. I certainly would not want this person walking the streets in the U.S. anymore. I hope he gets his – what comes around goes around and he certainly deserves it!

These guys should also lose all military financing, because after all that is tax payer money paying their salaries!

  • Jeremy wrote on 27 January, 2012, 8:42

This sick individual better get more than a “reprimand”. He better get 10-15 years in prison, that is the only way you are going stop these unspeakably cruel acts against animals. I’m sick and tired of animals being viewed and treated as nothing more than “property”.

I would not want the man in this video living in my neighborhood, a) because if I ever found out who he was, I would probably take a bat to him myself, and b) because who knows what else this sick piece of crap is capable of.

I am a huge supporter of the military, but I must admit that all these videos surfacing of inhumane acts committed against both man and animal, are really making me question what kinds of psychological tests, if any, these young men are required to take before being enlisted, and also what kind of training they are getting, because some sick individuals seem to be slipping through the cracks, or worse, are being created.

  • Karen Pittenger wrote on 27 January, 2012, 12:15

Criminal charges must be brought and there needs  to be a lawsuit on behalf of the child, because the intent was clearly to torment the child.  Also the soldiers were clearly murdering the sheep.  Not sacrificing the sheep, murdering the sheep.  When you laugh and make play from killing that makes you a psychopath, and these men are psychopaths.  Not only that, they have learned that there are rewards for psychotic behavior, and that extreme violence in condoned and accepted.  Any less than criminal prosecution will prove the military complicit in wanton violence.  But it is difficult to punish someone when the military culture that nurtures and permits wanton violence is to blame, so how does a community that causes violence punish violence? The military itself is in deep need of a moral overhaul.

  • Carol wrote on 27 January, 2012, 12:56

Troubled people commit troubled acts. Discharge, and psychiatric evaluation at a minimum. A menace to society someday. I won’t say some people don’t go into war already with a cruel disposition, but we certainly only make it worse subjecting them to war. Heaven help us what we’ve created over the past ten years in Iraq/Afghanistan.

I cannot watch – I can only imagine as I have seen way too much cruelty in video form – I belive that these soldiers are ill and need help but that is not the total answer – WOmething like killing a sheep with a baseball bat and enjoying it in front of children is an embarrassment to our ocuntry. THsi should be adressed and the men reprimanded and punished to the full extent of the law – Unfortunately for animals, we do not have laws to protect them – I hate ANIMAL CRUELTY and I pray we do somthing about this so it never happens again!!!!!!!!!! I get sick to my stomach witnessing abuse- DO what is right and hake a fuss about this – DOn’t let it frop!

  • beverly wrote on 28 January, 2012, 8:20

This suppose to be a man soldier, needs to be removed from the service and given jail time, yes he needs beaten badly also, but thats not gonna happen, he needs punished by remaing in jail for a very long time, and the other men who were laughing and not stopping him, need to also be removed from the service , they are no better then the man who did the beating.

  • Carrie Nutter wrote on 28 January, 2012, 8:52

The person who hurt this innocent animal is obviously very disturbed to do something like that to a helpless animal. I agree that besides psychiatric help, he should also be in jail (I can’t say I would be sorry if the same type of treatment occurred to him when he was in jail either). The persons that did not try to stop him and laughed at this should also be considered a part of this and receive some type of reprimand. People need to stand up for what they feel is right, not just follow the crow, especially when someone is abusing another creature-animal or human. These individuals are bad examples of military personnel and are ruining the reputation of others in the military who do care about animals.

  • Claudia wrote on 28 January, 2012, 11:32

Any person that could do something so cruel will escalate to being a human predator.

People like this should be removed as humanely as possible from the face of this planet.

Between soldiers blowing up poor stray dogs and now beating a poor little sheep with a bat, what in same heck are the soldiers over there doing?

    Many have lost their humanity.

Big brave macho men………… takes a real man like my husband who is gentle and kind to animals. A real man doesn’t go around beating up any entity.

Therapy isn’t going to help any person that is this far gone, they are beyond redemption.

Wait and see if I’m not right. Most serial killers all started out on animals.

They will come home and get their jollies either abusing children, women or more animals.

Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your website?
My blog is in the exact same niche as yours and my users would truly benefit from a lot of the information you present here.
Please let me know if this okay with you. Cheers!

There are also many special discounts and offers that can be availed for Las Vegas Magic Show, if tickets are booked through internet.
Part of the reason that it has remained a good option is that the room price when compared to other strip prices is much lower.
