As In Defense of Animals predicted, 107 new geese replaced those city killed
New York, NY (August 19, 2010) – In the thirty-eight days since New York City captured and gassed to death an entire population of Canada geese in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, 107 new geese have taken their place, reports In Defense of Animals, an international animal protection organization that has campaigned to end the slaughter. The geese were killed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) under a contract with New York City and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The count was conducted by Anne-Katrin Titze, a wildlife rescuer in Brooklyn, who has compiled other statistics on the resident waterfowl of Prospect Park, including the 2010 official Prospect Park Waterfowl Count for the New York State Ornithological Association and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
“Just over a month after the massive slaughter, nearly one-quarter of the original flock has been replaced. This shows the absurdity and pointlessness of the eradication program” said In Defense of Animals spokesperson Barbara Stagno.
“This proves the utter folly and needless cruelty of the July 8 extermination,” agreed City Council Member Letitia James, representing the city’s 35th district near Prospect Park. “Killing those geese did nothing for airline safety. In fact, it likely made it more dangerous, since it encourages the movement of more birds in the sky. I pray that the USDA allows the new arrivals to have the opportunity to become residential Canada geese of Prospect Park Lake.”
New York State Senator Eric Adams, representing the 20th Senate district encompassing Prospect Park added, “This return of the goose population lays bare the ineffectiveness, complete recklessness, and unjustifiable brutality of the extermination that occurred on July 8th. We must not permit this unacceptable viciousness to be repeated. This is not a choice between airline safety and the geese; alternatives have been recommended by a number of reputable animal protection organizations. Civilized, benevolent, ‘humanitarian’ solutions are available, and they are the only acceptable ones.”
Councilwoman James and Senator Adams addressed more than 150 people at a rally last Thursday organized by In Defense of Animals on the steps of City Hall. They joined In Defense of Animals and thousands of New Yorkers to call for a permanent end to the city’s contract with USDA, and the utilization of only humane, non-lethal methods to manage populations of geese.

I read this and cry. I think of all the beautiful innocent little families and singles cruelly wiped out to be replaced by more of the same who have no idea of what took place there so recently. It is beyond sad.
How was this allowed to happen? Why wasn’t there a mass protest planned? I don’t live in NY City but if this had been happening in my town, I’d have put myself between the geese and these murderers. Where was PETA????
This again proves that animals are smarter and kinder than man. When will mankind learn that this Earth does not revolve around us?
I really hope this never happens again. It enrages me as a NY state resident that my taxes are funding this type of atrocity. I hope the geese fly to warmer and more humane climate soon to give the state time to pass measures so this will never repeat.
So typical of our species. If ya’ can’t work with it, kill it. If that doesn’t work, kill some more. Brilliantly logical. When will we figure out that we are NOT the center of the universe or the earth for that matter. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!!!!

It is true that that makes cry to imagine all these beautiful small creatures being dying by meeting in a dark place which stinks of the death!
That it is necessary to be obtuse not to listen to the defenders of the animals which know there more than all these bureaucrats in a suit and tie! That they are stupid to believe that the slaughter is going to arrange(settle) everything! It is them whom it is necessary to exterminate, they are paid to give bad ideas onto the nature and the environment which they know only through their leaflets and the window of their office(desk)!
But why the city has no entâmé a process of oral contraception by means of the contraceptive seeds which already exist for the pigeons.

Why do aimals always have to be destroyed to please people? They find a great place (park, golf course, etc.) with grass, ponds, lakes, good areas to raise young and survive, but (Oh my goodness) they poop, gee, how bad can it get. Ever go into public toilets ad see how humans leave the area – how many never wash their hands, ?? Live and let live and shut up!
This is bull ! A cheap sneaky way to get rid of the geese. So what if they are at the park its their place also. Get over it people! Even more so they are spending tax payer dollars on this. I can think of better ways to spend it. There are more important things in this world to worry about then that. Try using your brains next time.
Any moron can kill. It doesn’t take intelligence or imagination or compassion. To the people who planned, authorized and executed this slaughter, the geese in Prospect Park were a problem. Well I’ve got news for you people: The geese are not the problem. You heartless idiots and your knee-jerk, brain dead “solutions” are the problem.
My deepest sympathy goes to the people of New York. We are in a struggle here in Madison too. Thank you IDA for trying so hard to prevent the slaughters of these beautiful animals. Who and what are REALLY behind this? Who is profiting? Is anyone looking further into this? Why does the FDA pressure these airports and municipalities when geese strikes are as rare as “being struck by lightening on the same day you win the Powerball jackpot”?
