In Defense Of Animals Adds $1,500 To Reward Fund To Catch Criminal Who Cut Off Puppy’s Ears

San Diego, Calif. (December 2, 2010) – In Defense of Animals (IDA), an international animal protection organization with over 85,000 members, announced today it has added $1,500 to a $3,000 reward fund established by San Diego Animal Advocates. The reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for cutting the ears off of a one month old puppy and abandoning him in the parking lot of the Target store in Mission Valley on November 19.

The puppy was brought to the San Diego Department of Animal Services in urgent need of veterinary care. The Labrador/Shepherd puppy, named “Sunny” by the Department, is receiving veterinary care and his prognosis for survival is very good.

The Department of Animal Services is investigating this case and is searching for any additional puppies who may have been similarly abused. The Department is also asking the public to be vigilant and listen for crying or whining, and if they hear anything suspicious to call the Department of Animal Services 24-hour dispatch at (619) 236-2341.

“This horrific cruelty is shocking and difficult to comprehend,” said Bill Dyer, IDA’s Southern California representative. “Anyone who would commit such a crime to a dog is capable of harming human beings, according to FBI profilers. They must be caught and brought to justice.”

Anyone with information concerning who may have committed this crime is asked to contact Lieutenant Dan DeSousa at 619-767-2624. Callers may remain anonymous. If a suspect is identified, they will face a felony animal abuse charges which could include prison time and fines.
