In Defense of Animals Announces New President Scotlund Haisley

San Rafael, Calif. (June 4, 2010) – In Defense of Animals (IDA) has appointed Scotlund Haisley as its new president. Haisley will lead the international animal protection organization in its mission to protect animals’ rights, welfare, and habitat through education, outreach, and hands-on rescue.

“Scotlund Haisley has been a dynamic force in the animal protection world for more than 20 years, and brings an impressive variety of experience that will serve us well in his position as President of In Defense of Animals,” said Dr. Elliot Katz, chairman of the board and founder of IDA. “Scotlund is the ideal individual to maximize IDA’s efforts to become a more powerful voice and force for our animal friends, by ending the rampant mistreatment of animals, not only in the U.S., but around the world.”

Haisley is a seasoned animal protection professional. He rose through the ranks from working as a humane officer to running a large nationally recognized shelter. Haisley most recently worked as Senior Director of Emergency Services for The Humane Society of the United States. In this position Haisley led the nation’s premier animal rescue team, and saved an unprecedented number of animals from both natural and man-made disasters. Previously Haisley served as Executive Director for the Washington Animal Rescue League, and conceptualized, raised the funds for and built a cutting-edge sheltering facility that set humane standards across the nation.

Through his many years of work in the field Haisley has become a vibrant leader in animal protection, and will devote his skills and expertise to leading IDA’s work to create a more just and compassionate world.

IDA is a recognized leader in animal rights and the protection of animals in their habitats. IDA rescues and gives sanctuary and veterinary care to animals around the world, including abused and abandoned animals in rural Mississippi, chimpanzee victims of the bushmeat trade in Cameroon, Africa, and street animals of Mumbai, India. IDA acts on behalf of our nation’s wild horses, elephants held in zoos and circuses, captive marine mammals, dogs in puppy mills, and the victims of vivisection and the fur industry. This is wonderful news. Scotlund is a rare person who combines intelligence and compassion with magnetic “people” skills. I’ve watched him speak to a crowd and his draw is astounding to watch. I don’t know how he stays so humble – probably the urgency of the humane needs for which he speaks. Congratulations to “In Defense of Animals” for selecting a person of such integrity to lead our monumental task.
