RENO, Nev.—Wild-horse advocates are calling for an independent investigation after the deaths of nine mustangs so far in a government roundup of the animals on the range north of Reno.

San Rafael, Calif.-based In Defense of Animals and Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Cloud Foundation criticized the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s handling of the roundup after two more deaths this past week.

A contractor is using two helicopters under BLM supervision to drive horses in the Calico Mountain Complex to corrals. The horses are then being trucked to a Fallon facility.

Horse activists maintain a colt was run so hard and long during the roundup that the hoof walls of its two hind feet came off. The colt was euthanized Thursday.

BLM officials disputed the groups’ accounts of the latest deaths.

BLM ( our federal government ) has mismanaged our Horse & Burro program for many years and our government will not stop the brutal round-ups. Ken Salazar proposed slaughter for our horses moving them Eastward bound. How can the American people have faith in our government to protect our horses? we can’t!

The deaths of our magnificent wild horses is more than distrubing. The justification for these “gatherings” is weak to say the least. The cruelty is breathtaking. The BLM has received many suggestions from legitimate rescues and other animal groups. One in particular, with which I am familiar is from “Return to Freedom”, a rescue group located in Lompoc, California. It was sent to the BLM several months ago, and as far as I know, there has been no response whatsoever., For a government agency who promised transparency, who has requested public input and has carefully tried to build its reputation as caring about our mustangs, they have failed miserabley. The reputation they have succeded in building is one of deceiving the public, breaking the law, using unnecessaryily cruel tactics to perform unnecessary tasks, costing the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and costing the horses their lives.
    Replace Ken Salazar!
